I love the play of light in oil painting. So much of that starts with color temperature. This 8-week course is a deep dive into exactly that: the push and pull between warm light and cool shadow (and how it flips depending on where the sun is).
One of my favorite artist, Joaquín Sorolla, will be our guide — the Spanish master of sun-drenched beach scenes and skin that looks lit from within. After doing some warm and cool color practices, we will make a master copy of one of his iconic beach paintings. This is the best way to learn how to handle glowing flesh tones, hot whites, and cool water reflections up close.
How each class runs:
- First 30 minutes — quick demo, lecture.
- Remaining 90 minutes — studio time. Work the weekly assignment (including the Sorolla copy) or bring your own project and get one-on-one coaching at your easel.
All students are always free to work on their own projects with individual guidance.
