Beginner Youth Art – Spring Term Character, Culture & Community Feb 16 – April 27

Is your student just beginning their artistic journey, or do they love to create and want to explore a wide variety of art materials and techniques? Our Beginner Youth Art Class is the perfect starting point!

Spring Term Focus: Figure drawing fundamentals, cultural art forms, and art’s role in community and communication.

Learning Outcomes: Students will gain a basic understanding of human proportion, develop original characters, and analyze the cultural significance of art forms like masks. The connection between pattern, repetition, and cultural textiles is explored.

Key Projects: Introduction to basic human form sketching, cultural mask creation, and advanced stamp-making for multi-color Printmaking, applying principles of design to repetitive imagery.

  • Ages: 8-12
  • Class Time: Mondays, 4:30 PM – 6:00 PM
  • Term Length: February 16, 2026 – April 27, 2026 (10 weeks)
  • Spring Break (Northshore School District): No classes on Monday, April 6, 2026. Classes resume Monday, April 13, 2026.
  • Investment: $450/term

Each week features an exciting, hands-on project designed to inspire creativity, encourage experimentation, and build fundamental skills in a supportive, step-by-step manner.

  • Week 1: Human Form Basics – Simple gesture drawing, understanding body proportions.
  • Week 2: Creative Lettering & Typography – Designing expressive letters and words.
  • Week 3: Mask Making
  • Week 4: Pattern & Repetition – print making on canvas pencil bags
  • Week 5: Acrylic Painting with Jamie
  • Week 6: Community/Neighborhood Art – Drawing or painting scenes from their own neighborhood or community with perspective lesson – pencil and watercolor
  • Week 7: 3 D Clay and wheel time
  • Week 8: Painting Clay Pieces
  • Week 9 and 10: Make-up / Open Studio Day These weeks are for students who may have missed a previous session to catch up on a project, and for all students to engage in free exploration with materials or work further on a current project under instructor guidance.
