Beginner Youth Art Exploring Depth & Narrative – Winter Term Nov 24 – Feb 9th

Is your student just beginning their artistic journey, or do they love to create and want to explore a wide variety of art materials and techniques? Our Beginner Youth Art Class is the perfect starting point!

Winter Term Focus: Principles of Design: Balance, Emphasis, Pattern, and introduction to visual storytelling and spatial representation.

Learning Outcomes: Students will begin to interpret and convey narrative through visual art, understand simple compositional balance, and develop an intuitive grasp of foreground, middleground, and background. This term introduces the properties of light and transparency in new mediums.

Key Projects: Observational still life drawing with basic value, Glass Fusion for exploring layering and color interaction in fused glass, and foundational Silk Painting techniques using resist to control dye flow.

  • Ages: 8-12
  • Class Time: Mondays, 4:30 PM – 6:00 PM
  • Term Length: 10 weeks per term November 24, 2025 – February 9, 2026 (10 weeks)
  • Holiday Break: No classes from Monday, December 22, 2025 – January 4, 2026. Classes resume Monday, January 5, 2026.
  • Investment: $450/term

Each week features an exciting, hands-on project designed to inspire creativity, encourage experimentation, and build fundamental skills in a supportive, step-by-step manner.

  • Week 1: Advanced Color Mixing and Acrylic Still Life Painting in the Style of Cezanne
  • Week 2: Glass Fusion – Winter Scene and Holiday Ornaments
  • Week 3: Chalk Pastels
  • Week 4 and 5: Watercolor painting a winter scene
  • Week 6 and 7: Narrative Collage/Storytelling Art – Creating art that tells a story using multiple images and textures. Silk Painting.
  • Week 8: Printmaking and mixed media inspired by Pete Cromer
  • Week 9: Landscape Painting – Focus on foreground, middleground, background.
  • Week 10: Make-up / Open Studio Day
