Oil painting class for ages 16 and over. All levels are welcome. All supplies provided.

Learn how to paint with oil paint in an impressionistic style.

I have a systematic way of painting and teaching, which moves from broad shapes and dark colors to smaller shapes and lighter colors. We use a limited palette of professional Da Vinci and Gamblin oil paints: Titanium White, Cad Yellow Medium, Yellow Ochre, Cad Red Medium, Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue, Phthalo Blue, Black, and Daniel Smith Medium.

We generally paint on painting panels, but canvas is also available. Most students start with an 11 x 14 board, although other options are also available.

Most students work from their photo reference. Please email me images you are thinking of before class, and we will select a good reference image. An Ipad or laptop are the best options. Printed photos work as well.

Everyone works at their own level and at their own pace. Most paintings require a minimum of three classes.

In these classes, we will begin by spending some time covering the specific topics listed below. I anticipate 15 – 30 minutes of class time spent on the individual lessons. Then we will move on to work on your individual pieces.

January 4th, Value; We will make a simple five-scale value chart and paint the basic object using this scale.

January 11th, Color Wheel: One of my favorite topics; We mill paint individual color wheels, learn how the colors around the wheel work together, and mix a variety of gray shades.

January 18th, Paint Strokes and Brush Handling; Focus will be on holding a brush correctly and making accurate and direct brush strokes – no licking.

January 25th, Still Life Pear; We will put all of the lessons together and paint a still life pear. The best way to learn to paint is from life. This simple setup will let everyone practice value, color, and paint strokes. This lesson will last the entire class.

If you want to make sure and get a space in these classes, I would consider signing up for all of them at the beginning of the month.

Oil paint stains, so don’t wear your favorite clothes.

All classes are held in my beautiful study at the top of Hollywood Hill. The Studio is on the north side of the house; just follow the signs.
